How to care for your straw hat (So It lasts forever-ish)

Straw hats are like summer romances: light, charming, and worth taking care of. Whether yours is your go-to gardening buddy, your beach day essential, or just you main character energy for the season, a little TLC goes a long way.

Here's how to show your straw hat the love it deserves, so it keeps its shape and charm all summer long (and many summers to come!).

Grab It by the brim, not the crown

We know, we know, It's tempting to pinch your hat right at the top. But here's the thing: constantly grabbing it by the crown can weaken the straw and lead to cracking.

Pick it up by the brim, ideally with clean dry hands. Treat it like a delicate pastry. Or a tiny sun shielding work of art, because that's exactly what it is.

Don't cook it (Store it in the shade)

Yes, straw hats love sunshine. But too much direct sun (when it's not on your head!) can dry them out and turn them brittle.

So when you're not wearing yours, keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. Think closet shelf or hat box, and not on the back seat of your car.

Avoid water as much as possible

Straw and water don't go together, although a light rain won't damage it. If your hat gets caught in the rain, gently shake off the water. Let it air dry in a cool spot and avoid heaters, radiators or hairdryers as artificial heat could warp and dry out your hat (the same way as prolonged exposure to sunlight).

Once it's fully dry, you're back in business

Give it a good home

To keep its shape and sass, store your straw hat with care. Place it upside down on it's crown. You can also hang it on a wide, rounded hook (nothing pokey). Bonus points if you stuff the crown with tissue paper for extra support.

Keep it fresh

Your hat's bound to collect some dust, and maybe even a few memories (ei: sunscreen smudges). Here's how to clean it up without drama:

Use a clean soft bristle brush and brush the straw's natural grain (don't go rogue). For stubborn spots, use a barely damp cloth with water only (no soap!) and gently pat. If your sweatband is looking a little salty, a little diluted vinegar on a soft cloth can help. Just test a tiny area first.

Take it with you (The smart way)

Going on an adventure? Don't squash your hat in a suitcase like a pair of socks.

Wear it on the plane (hello, airport glam). Or, pack it upside down in your suitcase with clothes tucked around and inside the crown.

Better yet? Choose a travel-friendly hat like our Anemone Adjustable Straw Fedora. When you’re on the go, simply loop the grosgrain ribbon keyhole to your bag strap and keep your hands free.

You can also invest in a proper hat carrier or travel case if your itinerary is action-packed.

Need a touch-up? Call a hat whisperer (That would be us!)

If your straw loses its shape, don't panic and reach for the steam. Straw can be tricky and not all hats bounce back from DIY attempts.

Instead, reach out to you local milliner, and let a pro work their magic. We offer maintenance on all of the hats that have been purchased through us.

Keep it cute, keep it forever

Taking care of your straw hat isn't just about maintenance, it's about love. It's about honoring the craftsmanship, the natural materials, and all the sunny moments you'll share together.

So wear it boldly, store it sweetly, and give it the occasional dust-off. With the right care, your hat will stay in top form season after season (and maybe even become an heirloom).
